00s Throwback with Alien Ant Farm and P.O.D

On Sunday night Goodnews Productions made it possible for Kekoas Korner to watch Alien Ant Farm and P.O.D. in Zurich at Dynamo. It was a major throwback to when MTV still played videos like Dryden Mitchell said.

I really didn’t know what to expect from this night because – obviouslyΒ – it isn’t the kind of music I usually listen to. However, I was super excited to cross some more “teen years” bands of my bucket list. The 68’s were up first, so early that we didn’t manage to catch them because our belly needed fuel for the night πŸ™‚

Alien Ant Farm – back when MTV still played videos

Three huge Alien Ant Farm logos were put on stage. The third one was printed on a backdrop with a beautiful earth – Obviously the view of an alien. Colour, neon lights made the stage perfect! Who needs more? πŸ™‚
The four lads from California took the stage with “Bad Morning”, “What I feel” and “Movies”. I loved the atmosphere already. People were really enjoying themselves and when Dryden announced the following it was time to freak out:

Back when MTV still played videos and not Jersey Shore etc. we had the pleasure of shooting this amazing video on top of the Masonic Temple. Who remembers it?

And with that “These days” started. I felt like 12 again and I knew exactly what they were talking about. What an iconic video and that song was one of my favs back then.

Dedication to our Mom’s and Chester Bennington

“Rubber Mallet”, “Wish”, “Neverment” followed this early highlight. Dryden Mitchell surprised me with his next dedication. He said that the next song is his Mom’s favourite and he literally just got off the phone with her. So let’s dedicate the next song to all the Moms because who doesn’t love their Mom’s. “Attitude” was another person’s favourite: Chester Bennington from Linkin Park. Alien Ant Farm dedicated “Attitude” to all the Moms and Chester Bennington. What a lovely unexpected touch.

“Courage”, “Lord Knows” and a cover by Bad Brains were next. Someone shouted “Smooth Criminal” and Dryden replied not yet first we do this cover is that OK? πŸ™‚ I’m really glad that this person shouted it because it meant that I wasn’t the only one waiting for that song either. “Sticks and “Stones” came on before Alien Ant Farm had to say “Goodbye” already. The hour-long set was over sooo quickly. But then finally the lights went red and the telltale chords started. Everyone whooped and started singing:

Annie are you OK? Are you OK, Annie?

I loved it! πŸ˜€ And with that I knew I had to get an Alien Ant Farm shirt. I thought that a black shirt with a white logo would be amazing but unfortunately, they didn’t have it. However, they had a preeeetty sick shirt instead which was just as nice – reasonably priced as well. Happy camper over here!

P. O. D – Rockin’ with the Best

At around 9.30 the four guys from P.O.D took the stage and the atmosphere was amazing from the start. The energy was rad and the moshpits started to form already with “BOOM”, “Rock the Party” and “Will you”. When Sonny asked us to put our hands up and bounce everyone – seriously everyone – did it. What an atmosphere. I love those Nu Metal, Punk, Rock gigs. Honestly, their gigs usually have one of the best atmospheres. And with that Sonny already jumped into the crowd and said hi.

“Panic Attack”, “Rocking with the Best” and “Soundboy Killa” was next. After thanking both the 68’s and Alien Ant Farm for opening the show and warming up the crowd, P.O.D as well dedicated a song to Chester Bennington – their buddy who will be missed. Sometimes you forget that Linkin Park was actually a Metal band because their songs became so mainstream. I thought the dedication was a nice touch. One band that will forever be on my bucket list to watch – May he rest in peace.

So-Cali in my Head

I really loved the variety in P.O.D’s set as well. From the really hard metal to rap to reggae – they had everything! The new spring weather we experience already made my day and if you are looking for your next summer hit, don’t go too far: “Always Southern California” is the perfect song! Another new song “Circles” followed but the crowd was in full voice again! Big thumbs up for the Swiss crowd and even P.O.D saw that! They said:

You guys go crazy on a Sunday Night!

“Satellite”, “Southtown” and “Murdered Love” were up next. I felt like the crowd got even louder! The sold-out Dynamo definitely peaked when the next song started. The phones went up, the moshpits opened up and we were ready to sing “Youth of the Nation”. Check out my story highlights on IG to get a feel of what I mean. Another song I never expected to hear at a punk gig: A very beautiful ballad called “Beautiful”. I was swaying from side to side and enjoyed it very much.

“On the Radio” got us back on the expected track. With “Aliiiiiiiiiive” the audience was in full voice again and after 90mins we were “Listening for the Silence”. The lights came on and the music started but I think P.O.D had such a great time that they just decided to come back and play 3 more songs! They said we will play until they kick us out! πŸ˜€ They really did play until 11 o’clock when they had to stop because of the curfew. Everyone walked out with a smile on their face.

Alien Ant Farm and P.O.D rocked the sold-out Dynamo crowd and more than once we had a throwback feeling back to the good old days when MTV still played music videos. What a fantastic Metal, Punk, Rock evening and another very early highlight of 2019!

Billy Talent celebrate their 25th anniversary at the Winterthurer Musikfestwochen

I missed out on the Billy Talent gig a few weeks ago at Dynamo so I was super happy when I got the accreditation from the Winterthurer Musikfestwochen. Some stats at for you at the beginning. I was 2 when Billy Talent decided to make music together and when Red Flag came out I was 14. So they were the sound of my teen years. Seeing them now took me back and I felt like a teenie again haha

Black Foxxes

Black Foxxes are three lads from Exeter, England. They did a great job warming up the crowds who were already there saving the best spots for Billy Talent. The guys were able to do slow quiet songs but also loud ones – which I really loved. I’d see them again since they seem quite talented and of course funny – they are English after all πŸ™‚

Turbostaat

I didn’t know the band. But apparently they liked their last gig at the Winterthurer Musikfestwochen 5 years ago that much that they took a break from their break and performed here. What an honour! πŸ™‚ I have to say the music didn’t really resonate with me – it was German Punk Rock. I don’t know why but it didn’t click so we – Shirley from Loads of Music – and I decided to find a bench somewhere and sit down. Get a little break before Billy Talent πŸ™‚

Billy Talent

Billy Talent came on even 5mins before they were supposed to. They were just ready to go on stage. I love that! πŸ˜€ With “Devil in A Midnight Mass” they started off with a bang! I think everyone was ready to rock out. The first beer flew through the air as well and I heard the mosh pits were already wild. And then Ben said something I didn’t expect at all and Billy Talent made their way into heart even more. He thanked us for coming out and he was glad everyone was enjoying themselves but he warned the lads in the mosh pits. Please be careful there are women and children close by so make sure to watch out a bit. Lovely and unexpected! πŸ™‚

Taken by Loads of Music on my camera haha

That said the party went on with “This Suffering”, “Big Red Gun”, “Turn Your Back”. Every time I thought I knew the song again because to be honest with you I do have all the records on my iPod but I don’t know every song by heart. So I was always listening to the first chords of the guitar played by Ian and waited if I knew it. It was quite funny. I always said ohh I knew the song but then I didn’t really. But I think I’ve listened to it but it didn’t properly register haha

Shirley finally caught up with me after her work of taking AMAZING pics was done – yes check out her blog! So I decided to hop on to the barrier and enjoy the gig from a bit higher up since I barely saw anything standing. So I saw how they performed “Ghost Ship of Cannibal Rats”, “The Ex”, “Saint Veronika” and “Diamond on a Landmine”. Ben was fascinated by the people who were hanging out the windows on the sides because let’s face it what else could the people who live there do except listening to the gig. It was such a special venue in the middle of the city where people actually lived. At one point I was seriously afraid that those guys would fall out the window haha

On it went with “The Crutch” and “The Navy Song”. Ben now said that their drummer Aaron was diagnosed with MS and is not able to play a full show anymore but he’s here right now and will take over the drums from Jordan for the next few songs. I had goosebumps. The original Billy Talent, Ben, Aaron, Ian and Jonathan started playing “Rusted from Rain” and the crowd gave out a loud cheer. What A Tune!! “Pins and Needles” and “Surrender” completed Aaron’s songs. I was in my element! πŸ˜€ But obviously I also had to take good pics for my blog so I was super focused at the same time.

“February Winds”, “Surprise Surprise” – which everyone belted out – “Afraid of Heights and “Try Honesty” followed. After the JT gig I had to quickly change the genre and listen to a lot of Billy Talent πŸ˜€ So one day after that amazing gig I went to bed with “Devil On My Shoulder” stuck in my head! I love that song and now that I was actually hearing it live it was even better! Obviously it stayed in my head again πŸ˜€ After an hour the four Canadian guys left the stage only to come back for the biiiig finale.

After “Viking Death March” Ben started a little speech:

Remember this feeling when you leave here! We’re all together as strangers from different walks of life, from different back grounds, different religions – none of it fucking matters!

As soon as the first chords of “Red Flag” rang around the Steinberggasse the red flares started to fire up. What I saw on a video afterwards is that around those two red flares a huge mosh pit was formed! It’s crazy, it’s mayhem, it’s punk! The whole street sang the song and it was amazing listening to this huge singalong. The clapping and the singing continued even more with the final song of the night: “Fallen Leaves”. Cracking finish to a brilliant show by those 5 talented Canadians! I hope to rock out to them again. Here’s to another 25 πŸ™‚

Punk Rock vom Feinsten! Punk Rock at its best!

Die Toten Hosen graced Zurich and the Hallenstadion with two nights of their Laune der Natour tour. So I enjoyed my Friday night with those amazing musicians. A lot of people did the same and went back on Saturday again. Let me tell you guys that this concert wasn’t like any other concert I’ve been to.

First difference: At 8 o’clock on the dot Campino – the lead singer of the Toten Hosen – came on stage to introduce their special guests. I’ve never seen the main act introduce their support. I absolutely loved it and to be honest I think it should be like that all the time. It’s a f***** hard job to get out in front of people who actually don’t want to see you and are only waiting for the main act. So kudos to every support act. YOU ROCK! Now back to the gig. Campino told us:

This band from Brighton is one of their favourite UK bands at the moment, so make some noise for The Barstool Preachers!

After a hug the show started and I absolutely loved their music and their attitude. I would have liked to buy some merch and their record but unfortunately we couldn’t find it anywhere… Anyway they did an amazing job and how cool is that name??? Plus they had a song where they actually sang about this dude who preaches from his bar stool. So well done you guys. Hope to see you again soon.

The songs played before the show were carefully chosen. We heard Campino’s buddy Marteria, Kaiser Chiefs, Blur and just before the show the whole crowd started to sing “You’ll Never Walk Alone”! How amazing is that?!?! Me in my Liverpool shirt singing YNWA I don’t think I ever started a concert in such a happy place πŸ˜€ (P.S: for those of you who don’t know Campino is a huge LFC fan like me)
sdr
At 9 die Toten Hosen flags were raised and they came on stage with a bang! For the first song “Urknall” everyone was already singing along and lots of flags were also raised within the audience in the front section. I was mesmerised. “AuswΓ€rtsspiel”, “Du lebst nur einmal”, “Laune der Natur” followed. The atmosphere was already boiling and lots of beer was thrown around and drunken too πŸ˜‰ Mosh pits were forming and people were jumping and just having a good time. Even the people with seating tickets were standing!

I knew that I won’t be singing a lot since I didn’t know a lot of lyrics and songs but it really didn’t matter. The songs are designed that everyone can singalong to during the chorus. So I gladly joined in for “Niemals einer Meinung” and “Die SchΓΆne und das Biest”. I also had time to have a look around the audience. I’ve never seen such a mixed crowd. You saw families, a lot of guys but also women of all ages. Die Toten Hosen manage to embrace everyone. “Liebeslied” was played but then for “Bonnie & Clyde” you could really hear the crowd singing. Finally a song I knew “Altes Fieber” and I jumped up and was chanting along.

“Wie viele Jahre (Hasta la muerte” is another crowd favourite and is always a big hit. (Also in the merch department) You could seriously sense their energy and it vibrated off into the crowd. All of the lads are around 50 and they still rock around like 20 year olds. For the next two slower songs “Tauschen gegen Dich” and “Ertrinken” they got the strings out! They showed that they can’t just rock around but also do slow songs. I especially like the great thoughtful lyrics. But I just realised that I won’t be able to catch up on all the old songs who the real Toten Hosen Fans know by heart. But anyway it is an amazing band and you deffo need to see them live. Again I was surprised when they started to sing English. The guys sang “Pushed Again”. They did a brill job!
2017-11-10 23.32.23
“Alles was war” was next and I liked “Unter den Wolken” a lot because I kinda knew it! πŸ™‚ Somewhere in the depth of my lyrics mind I found the words to sing to this song. I loved it haha Suddenly the first rows started to kneel down and I was like what’s going on?? Campino then explained to the others that we all have to sit down now. We gladly obliged only to jump up to the chorus of “Steh auf, wenn du am Boden bist!”. The atmosphere was buzzin. Only that afternoon I started to listen to some songs and I really really loved a song called “Wannsee” and lucky for me they played it. Campino got the strings back on stage and said let’s get the Vodka Ltd out. It was absolutely hilarious. He explained before that before the strings joined the tour they were running low on alcohol but now it’s Vodka at 3pm! (At least for them not the guys) πŸ™‚

Another older song was played “Das MΓ€dchen aus Rottweil” before die Toten Hosen took a stand with “Willkommen in Deutschland”. It is honestly quite hilarious to listen to the stories the lads tell. Campino mentioned a living room concert in 1993 or that they had a fondue with lots of Kirsch in it after a gig. When they walked home to the hotel they realised they lost a band member so they walked back. He had fallen down a hole on a construction site! I couldn’t stop laughing. The gig went on with “Paradies” and “WΓΌnsch dir was”. Just before they left the stage for their first encore they sang “Hier kommt Alex”! After 90 mins straight we had a quick break.

Die Toten Hosen won’t run out of songs to play so they came back with “Alles passiert”, “Mehr davon” and “Alles aus Liebe”. Only to play one of the most famous songs “Zehn kleine JΓ€germeister”. I didn’t think they would play that one but I enjoyed it a lot! The people gave out a loud cheer when they started to sing it so I wasn’t the only one. A lovely song to say goodbye to is “SchΓΆnen Gruss, auf Wiederseh’n”. But they only said goodbye for a few seconds. Campino came back with a Fortuna DΓΌsseldorf shirt which Breiti gave him as a present. So I felt right at home with my Liverpool shirt. Plus I wasn’t the only one in a football shirt. It was quite funny to see: the audience either wore a Hosen shirt or a football jersey. There weren’t many people wearing plain clothes.
oznor
“All die ganzen Jahre” and “Freunde” were song 28 and 29 on the set list. They guys played over 2 hours now and they weren’t finished. Campino told us you know that we are here the whole weekend so you know that we have time. Do you want us to play some more songs? Of course we did and a loud cheer confirmed this. So this song is probably the most mainstream song die Toten Hosen got. It’s played on the radio, in football stadiums or at political conventions. Once you release a song you don’t have much power over where its played. Campino explained:

“Tage wie diese” was written for nights like these!

The guys cannot leave the stage without playing this song. Whether you are a Liverpool Fan or a Fortuna or FCZ or Basel or supporting Switzerland, this song brings people together and connects them. It is my favourite song and the best way to end this amazing concert:

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don’t be afraid of the dark
At the end of a storm
There’s a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone
